Humility That Matters
There are many who for fame and gain put on a disguise of humility. Media, today, amplifies our ability to do so. But when the heart is scrutinized, the real substance is known.
The greatest example of humility is given to us in Lord Jesus Christ. The scripture says, “Who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross.” (Phil. 2:6-8, ASV).
To be crucified was the most shameful form of death at that time. What is more astonishing is that He died on the cross for wicked sinners like us. This holy and sinless God condescended to such a lowly estate by dying on the cross.
It may be hard to accept that we are wicked or sinful. Although we try to appear good outwardly, our heart is best known to us. We might have a biased judgement of our heart’s condition. But the holy God who tries the heart says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9).
God now commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). It is a call for us to examine our heart as per God’s holy standards, confess our sins, and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, for He died for our sins and rose again for our justification.
There is a day of judgment approaching. The Bible warns us about a tribulation unlike anything this world has ever seen or known. Many will perish when God judges this world for their sin. Yet, we read that in those times, there will be those who were not killed and “repented not” (Rev. 9:20,21; 16:9,11). Their heart was so hardened against God, that instead of acknowledging the judgement of God and repenting, they continued in their wickedness.
The Bible solemnly warns that all who have not repented of their sins and turned to God for their salvation will be condemned to eternal damnation.
Dear friends, let us not harden our hearts today. Our soul’s salvation is more important than anything else in this life. We need to humble our heart to accept this assessment of God and come to Him for our salvation. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit (Ps. 34:18).
